1. Cartography: The study of maps and map making
2. Meteorology: The study of weather
3. Latitude: Imaginary measurement lines that measure North and South of the equator.
4. Longitude: Imaginary measurement lines that measure East and West of the Prime Meridian.
5. Geography: The study of EVERYTHING on earth from rocks and rainfall to people and places.

Assignments by Date
August 20: First Day of Geography
Mind Map: On a blank 8x11 piece of white paper, students need to draw a map of the world from memory, labeling continents and oceans. Students will be graded on NEATNESS not accuracy.

August 24: Why do we study Geography?
World Map: Follow the instructions on the world map. You only need to do the first map, the second is there for practice, in case you mess up. REMEMBER, you are being graded on neatness as well as accuracy. Be sure to read the directions carefully to ensure you label and color the map correctly. You can look up the information on line, or you can check out a purple World Geography book at the library. This is due when we take the walkaway
5 Themes Pre-Test: Students will need to come see me to make up the missed pre-test from today. |
August 26: Why Study Geography/Define Geography/5 Themes
Students need to go through the Why Study Geography Power point, and watch the video linked there.
Print out the 5 Themes of Geography Notes, and fill it out as you go through the 5 Themes of Geography Power point. Complete the Studying Geography Worksheet using the Purple World Geography Textbook. The information is found in Chapter 1. |
August 28: Review 5 Themes/Begin Willowcreek Observation
Observation at Willowcreek: Students need to use the 5 Themes of Geography to complete the observation worksheet. Be sure to be specific and use names and terms that are specific to Willowcreek, i.e., specify the mountains to the west of Willowcreek are the Oaker Mountains, not just mountains.

September 1: Discuss Observation Willowcreek/Latitude & Longitude Packet
Understanding Latitude and Longitude: Students will need to complete the packet. Please email me with any questions.
United States Maps: Students need to follow instructions to complete the maps. Maps need to be kept until Walkaway and used to study from. |
September 3: Grade Lat/Long assignment/Create Your Own Nation
Create Your Own Nation: Follow the instructions on the worksheet to create your own Nation, specifically using the 5 Themes of Geography

September 8: Finish Nation/Review for Walkaway
Walkaway Review: Complete the walkaway review in preparation to take the 5 Themes walkaway.
